This refuge on the Maine and New Hampshire border, covering 8,700-acre Lake Umbagog and its uplands and freshwater marshes, is habitat for many wetland migratory wildlife species.
The combined efforts of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the two states, and private industry are aimed at preserving this habitat and the wildlife that reside here, as well as timber resources.
Lake Umbagog is considered the best breeding habitat in New Hampshire for the common loon and osprey.
The refuge is also home to several species of birds, including the bald eagle, peregrine falcon, black duck, northern harrier and woodcock.
The Magalloway River Trail provides an easy, one-third-mile walk amidst trees to an observation platform that overlooks the backwaters of the Magalloway River. The trail is wheelchair accessible.
