The 13,168-acre Bayou Cocodrie refuge was established to protect wintering habitat for migrating waterfowl. It also protects one of the nation's least disturbed bottomland hardwood forests.
The Louisiana black bear uses the refuge as a corridor between habitats, although there is no resident population.
The refuge is open to recreational use year-round.
Hunting is permitted during specified hunting seasons. Check with refuge staff for hunting schedule details.
