Bahia Honda has a tropical environment unique in the continental United States.
The park has dunes, mangrove forests, tropical hardwood hammocks and submerged marine habitats.
Many of the local plant and animal species are of Caribbean origin. Several rare plants, including yellow satinwood, silver and key thatch palms, and the endangered small-flowered lily thorn, are found in the park.
Unlike the other Florida Keys, Bahia Honda has excellent swimming beaches, in both the Atlantic Ocean and Florida Bay.
The park offers fishing, camping, bayside cabins, a nature center, nature talks and a marina with two boat launching ramps.
Bahia Honda State Park is 12 miles south of Marathon.
