Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge, made up of nine parcels including three islands, covers approximately 80 acres. Surrounded by the crystal clear, spring-fed waters of Kings Bay, this refuge protects the West Indian manatee, an endangered species.
More than thirty warm water natural springs provide 600 million gallons of fresh water daily and produce the warm water habitat for manatees.
Volunteers assist the refuge staff in educating visitors about manatees and the refuge. Contact the refuge for details.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Manatee Education Center is located within the Homosassa Springs State Wildlife Park visitor center.
