The Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area is a treasure trove of geology, history, wildlife, scenery, fishing and terrific rafting and kayaking.

The rapids along the 148-mile stretch of the Arkansas River are challenging, with some reaching a tumultuous Class V!

This whitewater river, among the country's most heavily used, is managed cooperatively by the Bureau of Land Management and the Colorado Division of Parks and Outdoor Recreation. The river flows between the Leadville and Pueblo Reservoir.

Along the river's course are bighorn sheep, ghost towns, granite canyons, intriguing plantlife and birds.

Additional boat launch sites and support facilities are planned along this popular waterway.

Outdoor Activities

View bighorn sheep while paddling on the Arkansas River.

Fishing in the Arkansas is outstanding. The river is known for its world-class brown trout in spring and fall.

The kayaking is challenging on the powerful Arkansas River.
