Capture the spirit of the Wild West in Routt National Forest. Ride a mountain bike or four-wheel-drive vehicle into remote ghost towns, abandoned after Colorado's frenzied gold rush. Backpack, horseback ride or raft in the forest's impressive wilderness areas.
You can cross-country ski or snowmobile on marked trails and enjoy oustanding downhill skiing at renowned Steamboat Ski Area.
Many lakes are open for ice fishing, including Big Creek Lake, one of the state's largest natural lakes.
The forest's varied terrain provides habitat for a wide range of wildlife, including threatened and endangered species such as sandhill cranes and Colorado cutthroat trout. At Fish Creek Falls, cascading water tumbles 263 feet over sheer rock walls.
There are nearly 800 miles of trails, including the Continental Divide Trail. The forest has 44 campgrounds and many picnic areas.
Included in the Routt's nearly 1.5 million acres are the Mount Zirkel Wilderness Area and portions of the Never Summer, Neota, Flat Tops, Rawah and Platte River wildernesses.
Routt is part of the Medicine Bow-Routt National Forests and Thunder Basin National Grassland administrative unit.
